1996 S-103 Summer Meeting

Introduction of members present - Aitken, Emino, Safley, Steglin, Hodges, van Blokland, Hinson, Hall, Turner, McNiel, Brumfield, Williams

Minutes from last meeting approved.

Comments from Administrative Advisor:

  • New member- Reeser Manley (University of Massachusetts)
  • National Survey was published on the Internet (Tom Helms- new Executive Director) - 2 Internet sites...University of Tennessee/ Texas A&M University
  • Denny Wolnick/ Penn State will not participate
  • Kevin McNew (University of Maryland) and Tim Woods (UK) are potential new members

We will be beginning the process of renewing our project very shortly, with the main thrust of this effort occurring in 1997. No extensions will be granted this time around. The Southern Director and CSREE want to see a lot of interdependence on research that conducted by regional committees. All committee members are charged with the task of brainstorming regarding collaborative research projects for the next project.

Manuscript Reports:

  • Irrigation publication - still progressing - will meet at next meeting to discuss this publication
  • Container nursery publication- Ready for publication on the Internet
  • Field nursery publication - Ready for publication on the Internet (Finished and reviewed)

Discussion regarding interactive versions of the cost of production budgets, and use of this information to develop "industry standards".

  • Marketing - Progressing - will contact one another
  • Greenhouse - Progressing - chapters will be collected.

Guest Speaker -- Urbain Avermaete - International Society Horticulture Sciences (ISHS)

  • Commission for Management & Marketing - 10 commissions of ISHS
  • In 2000, meeting will be held in Guernseg, Channel Islands, U.K.
  • Institutes of Holland, Germany and Sweden are main players.
  • There will be an exchange of ideas from formal presentations and informal contracts

Discussed whether we should coordinate with HRI on the Scope Report - Steve will E-mail Brooker

The next meeting will be in Fort Meyers - February 27, 1997

Summer 1997 meeting - Niagara on the Lake (Dave will send Steve an overview of the All-American selections National Gardening Bureau)

Ideas for new project proposal were discussed:

  • Interactive budgets
  • Standardize income statements
  • New grasses in the public sector
  • Evaluation of field trial programs
  • Best management practices
  • Cost/benefit analysis of best management practices

Presentation by Werner J. Reinartz, Ph.D. student in marketing at the University of Houston regarding the Tree Nursery Industry in Germany. The SIDS committee would like to express their most sincere thanks to Werner for his outstanding presentation.
