Friday, August 26, 1993 - Business meeting in Best Western Central meeting room 3:00 - 5:00 p.m.

Actions taken:
- Barton called business meeting to order at 3:00 p.m. at the Best Western Central. Doyle Johnson and Bob Christensen were introduced to the group. Stegelin provided an overview of local tour arrangements.
- Approval of February 24-27, Las Vegas, Nevada meeting minutes.
- Comments from CSRS representative - no comments.
- Comments from administrative advisor:
* Last meeting of S103 as it is now numbered.
* June 11 - Sent Larry Crowede the revised outline.
* June 23 - Dr. Crowde sent revised outline to SRDC committee.
* August 1 - Secretary received comments from reviewers and all were positive.
* Will be sent to the Committee of Nine.
* Charles Safely - interested in participating - 100% Extension.
- Report from project proposal subcommittee:
John Brooker reported that all revisions had been made and the proposal was being sent to the Committee of Nine.
- Annual report update:
Stegelin reported a revision of the format for publications to be included in the annual report (SEE ATTACHED)
- National Survey Report:
Brooker provided copies of the previous survey instrument (A) used as well on edited survey instrument (B) that excluded questions considered to be less important for the 2nd survey. (SEE ATTACHED QUESTIONNAIRES A&B)
- Manuscript reports:
(A) "Principles, Practices, Physical Requirements, and Comparative Cost of Irrigating Nursery Crops." - Bob McNeil said the material from Ohio has been scanned.
(B) "Landscape Design Bulletin and Installation." - Tim Rhodus will get a draft copy of what has been done and will proceed.
(C) "Water Issues Bulletins: A Literature Review." - No report.
(D) "Costs of Establishing and Operating Container Nurseries in Climatic Zones 5 and 6: An Update." - Bob McNeil provided 3 copies of the field report and 3 copies of the container report.
(E) "Cost of Establishing and Operating Greenhouse Grown Crops." - (Hall, Haydu, Barton, Thomas, Rhodus, Brooker) Hall reported that subcommittee will meet on Sunday morning to discuss this research project.
(F) New publications and ideas.
*Doyle Johnson reported that Statistical Bulletin 862 has been updated and revised and he will send copies to S103 members.
*A new subcommittee was established to investigate the potential of a regional turfgrass related bulletin. Members include Haydu (chair), Brooker, Hall, Lang, and Stegelin.
*A new subcommittee was established to investigate environmental landscape programs and the use of alternative plant materials. Members include Aitken, Barton, Eakes, Free, and Lang.
- AAN publication proposal:
Sue Barton indicated that AAN (American Association of Nurserymen) is interested in publishing future S103 reports that would be suited for their clientele. Also, S103 members can receive AAN publications at a reduced rate. Contact Sue Barton if interested.

* Working on irrigation publication.

* MS. thesis project looking at perceptions of garden center customers shopping for perennials (survey and model using conjoint analysis.
* Survey of industry size in Ohio.
* Survey of business management issues.
* Perennial Plant Association Survey.
- N. Lounds (NM)
* Model developed for drip irrigation in containers using weather variables.
* Follow-up on establishing plants in landscape.
* Writing a book on Southwestern plant materials.
- J. Brooker (TN)
* Finishing a study of the Tennessee turfgrass industry.
* Updated Tennessee Nursery Industry Survey.
* Interested in greenhouse production of bedding plants.
- C. Hall (TX)
* Economic study of the Texas turfgrass industry.
* Interested in study of greenhouse production - 8:15 a.m. subcommittee meeting.
- J. Aitken (SC)
* Study involving levels of K on tree caliper.
* Environmental landscape program for South Carolina DOT (alternative plant materials).
* Suggested a new committee to focus on this issue - Barton, Eakes, Aitken, Long, and Free.
- R. Christensen (MA)
* Looking at costs of woody landscape plants.
* Looking at present value analysis of nursery production.
- S. Turner (GA)
* Study involving marketing strategies for producers.
* Interested in consumer preferences at the retail level.
- J. Eakes (AL)
* Working on urban tree establishment relating to drought cycles.
- D. Johnson (DC)
* Statistical Bulletin 862 is being updated for '92.
* Updating Statistical Bulletin 817
* Report from '92 agricultural census.
- J. Free (AL)
* Foresees more research within TVA in future.
- T. Phillips (MS)
* Follow-up project looking at cash flows for garden centers using models developed in previous study.
- S. Lang (LA)
* Turf industry survey being conducted.
* Looking at greenhouse production and seed germination of natives.
- F. Stegelin (KY)
* Developing business marketing plans for nurserymen.
- J. Haydu (FL)
* Turfgrass survey in final stages.
* Canning.
* Looking at growth of large trees in containers.
- Future Meeting Plans:
Haydu discussed upcoming winter meeting, February 16-18, 1994 - provided a tentative agenda. (see attached)
Motion made by McNeil, seconded by Haydu to have the summer meeting in San Diego, August 11-14, 1994 in conjunction with ASHS and AAEA annual meetings.
