1995 S-103 Winter Meeting
January 26-27
New Orleans, Louisiana

  1. Agenda adopted as presented.

  2. Introduction of Bridget Behe, Willie Buchanan and Jeff Kuehny as new members of the S103 committee.

  3. Phillips announced Richard Harkness is the new replacement for Steve Newman at Mississippi State University.

  4. Minutes from last meeting were approved.

  5. Dr. Emino announced (on Paul Farris' behalf) of the CSRS name change to CSREES.

  6. Willie Buchanan provided an overview of TVA activities related to the objectives of the S103 committee including environmental compliance, secondary containment regulations, etc.

  7. Discussion held regarding annual report. It was recognized that some nursery related publications were missing. If you have published any nursery related publications during 1994, please send citations of these publications to Sue Barton by February 15th.

  8. Manuscripts reports given:

    * Irrigation manuscript... This subcommittee will meet to review the rough draft and determine its' future.

    * Landscape design manuscript... Sue Barton had talked with David Beattie and Penn State will publish this one.

    * Costs regarding container nurseries.. Bob McNiel will send a memo to all members to determine the number of copies they would like.

    * Costs regarding field nurseries... Motion passed to print this publication. There was some discussion as to the methodology and disclaimer statements included in the publication. Also, some discussion regarding the presentation of the data in the publication and the need to provide worksheets in future publications in order to make them more user friendly.

    * Overwriting manuscript... David Beattie will serve as editor. Sue Barton will contact him regarding the status of the bulletin. Joe Eakes and Jim Aitken will provide comments regarding practices in their regions.

  9. Brooker announced that he has generated summary tables regarding data from the National Survey, which includes about 1,050 usable responses.

  10. Discussion held regarding the S103 Project Description and how the active subcommittees are meeting the objectives of the new project. The following matrix lists the S103 objectives and which subcommittees (and bulletins) are working to meet those objectives. If you are interested in working with an existing subcommittee or forming a new subcommittee, please let Sue Barton know as soon as possible. A list of current subcommittees and bulletins in progress is attached.

    16. The S103 Committee would like to extend their appreciation to TVA who co-sponsored the meeting.

    17. Doyle Johnson provided census data for S103 members. He will provide copy of his speech regarding the turfgrass industry.

    18. Subcommittee Reports:

      1. Turfgrass subcommittee
        1. Will looking at surveys from each state.
        2. Develop an outline of subsequent book.

      2. Plant establishment subcommittee
        1. Will look at urban plant establishment.
        2. Investigating wildflower/native plant drought tolerance and improving germination.
        3. Buffer establishment research.
        4. Future of developing costs of establishing plants in these areas.

      3. Irrigation subcommittee
        1. will meet at other times to carry forward the effort.

      4. Marketing subcommittee
        • Discussed the publication regarding marketing related literature:
          • Everyone needs to send to Sue Barton all publications that are marketing oriented.
          • Steve and Sue will divide up the articles and begin a draft "literature review" patterned after Bridget Behe's work on floricultural crops.

        • Discussion regarding the marketing committee's work toward meeting S103 Project Description:
          • objective 1-e: Steve's telephone survey work fits here. He will send a memo to all subcommittee members regarding questions that he normally asks.
          • objective 2a: Steve, Roger and Charlie will work on conjoint analysis project in the future.
          • objective 3a: Elasticities research by Safley. Effects of POS, impulsive buying by Safley and Behe.
          • objective 3b: SERVQUAL research by Behe. Image assessment research by Charlie. Steve's advertising related research.
          • objective 3d: No work in progress at this time.

      5. Costs of greenhouse crops - Minutes of the Costs of Greenhouse Crops subcommittee
        • Robin Brumfield announced the publication of the 1994 Greenhouse Operating Performance Report by the PPGA. Call (800) 647-PPGA for your copy.
        • The subcommittee used Sue's proposed "Table of Contents" as an agenda for the meeting.
        • Sections of the manuscript regarding Greenhouse Costs (and responsibilities) are as follows:
            I. Location/Market demand - Brooker, Safley, Hall, Brumfield
            II. Crop Selection/Product Mix - Behe
            III. Facilities - Brumfield, Barton, Wolnick, Kuehny
            IV. Labor - will be handled later
            V. Worksheets prefaced by 2 case studies - will be handled later.
            VI. Computer software - Robin will provide copies of software she has developed.

        • Sue Barton will revise the "Table of Contents" to reflect this discussion and send it out to all subcommittee members.

    19. Officers elected for next year - Barton, chair/Hall, secretary

    20. Future Meeting Sites:

      * Next meeting - June 22-24 - Providence, RI (see attached details as presented by Bob Christensen.)

      * Winter 1996 - Houston, TX

      * Summer 1996 - Rutgers, NJ

      * Robin announced details of 1996 meeting. At the next meeting, there will be brief research presentations from: P.J. van Blokland, Joe Eakes, Jeff Kuehny, and John Brooker

    21. Individual state reports distributed (see attached).

    22. Dave Williams initiated discussion of research regarding historical pricing patterns within the nursery industry. A new subcommittee was developed to conduct this research.

    23. Jeff Kuehny announced that LSU is looking for a Weed Specialist and Woody Ornamentalist.

    24. Meeting adjourned at 12:00 p.m. - Saturday.
